This Shabbat: Lock-Down Drill March 5!

Shabbat Lock-Down Drill March 5, 2016

The Bayit will be holding this coming Shabbat a shul-wide drill in order to prepare for the unlikely event of an intruder in our building.

The drill will be led by our CSS team.

Here's what you may want to know:

Q: What will I need to do ? How can I help make everyone safe?
◦ Please follow the instructions of the CSS Team. They have been trained in security and have rehearsed this scenario. ◦ We will not be going outside but you may be asked to move from your place. As always, please be sensitive to those needing a little assistance.

Q: How does this impact our children in the building?
◦ Our children's safety is a top priority. Youth groups leaders will be trained in lock-down procedures and leaders and children will meet the CSS volunteers who will ensure that the drill runs smoothly and successfully.

Q: What do I do if I see a flashing blue light in the ceiling?
◦ A flashing blue light is a signal of potential danger. Please calmly proceed to a Safe Area (see below) and listen for instructions.

Q: Where are the Safe Areas? What makes them safe?
◦ Main Sanctuary ◦ Lower Level: Beit Midrash and Social Hall ◦ Any room on Floors 2 and 3 ◦ The Safe Areas put at least one locked interior door between you and an exterior door through which an intruder may enter.

Q: What do I do if I sense a potential danger?
◦ Pull one of the Blue Panic switches: this will summon the Police and cause the Blue Lights to flash, alerting others. ◦ Please note the location of the Blue Panic switches on each floor. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for helping make all of us safer.

Happy Purim Katan!

Paurim Katan is tonight and tomorrow, Tuesday Day!

Purim Katan: (lit. “Minor Purim”); is a semi-festive day in the intercalated first month of Adar in a leap year, whose date corresponds to the date in which Purim is actually celebrated that year in the following month of Adar.

In regular years, the 14th of Adar is Purim, the festival that celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people from Haman's evil decree in the year 3405 from creation (356 BCE). In a leap year -- which has two Adars -- Purim is celebrated in Adar II, and the 14th of Adar I is designated as Purim Kattan, the "Little Purim." There are no special observances, however, associated with Purim Kattan, other than the omission of Tachnun ("supplications") from the daily prayers and a prohibition against fasting or holding eulogies on this day. The Code of Jewish Law cites an opinion that one should increase in festivity and joy, but rules that there is no obligation to do so; "Nevertheless,a person should increase somewhat in festivity... for 'One who is of good heart is festive always' " (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 697:1).
